Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships
Filling out the Federal Financial Aid form needs to be done as soon as possible in January. You want to have it sent to all the school s you are considering before you apply. In most cases this will require you get one of your parents fill it out. Stay on them and get it done. Scholarships can be applied for all along. Find out what the deadline is for the ones you want and keep them. Many have deadlines as late as the end of June, after you have graduated. Keep applying, get more and keep looking; remember, the more money you get n scholarships, the less you have to come up with yourself. It is even possible to have everything paid for with aid and scholarships and get a refund from the school for anything over your expenses. Having spending money and not needing a job is ideal for your first year on your own.
Apply to Schools
Even if you know which school you want to attend, it is always a good idea to apply to a couple of different ones in case you change your mind at the last minute. You can always say no. many schools have a deadline for getting the most aid and then another deadline for admission, make sure you know which is which and you apply in time.
Set Up Housing
One you are accepted at a college, you need to decide where you are going to live. In most states, if it is your first year and you are not going to be living with your parents, you have to stay in the dorms. You need to make sure you know the deadline for applying for housing and what deposit is needed. You absolutely MUST keep this deadline and have the money to the school or you will be out of luck. While setting up housing you will also have to choose a meal plan. Look it over carefully and be honest about how much and where you plan on eating.
Tour the School
You probably already went on a tour of the school before you applied and were accepted. Things didn't stick too well when you went the first time. Now you need to go on one and start to really get a feel for the school and where you will be living. Make note of housing and how much room you will have.
Start buying the Things you Want to Take
There will be things you want to take off to school that have been in your life for a long time and you will want to but new things as your start a new chapter in your life. Start getting things together so you are not trying to get them all at once and forgetting something. If you are using things, make a list to remind yourself to pack them a few days before leaving.
Going off to school is fun, exciting and just a bit scary. As long as you have everything in order and know what to expect, it will go off without a hitch. Don't forget to say goodbye to everyone, and get email addresses to keep in touch. You may be too busy with things at first, but it will settle down eventually.
