An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in court reporting can lead to a very rewarding and lucrative career in a variety of fields. Most notably, court reporters work within the judicial system. A court reporter documents all that occurs within a courtroom including testimonies and judicial orders, as well as verbal communications between the judge, legal counsel and jury. In addition, those with court reporting degrees also work in the broadcast field, using their skills to provide closed captioning during live television broadcasts. Coursework for a career in court reporting includes classes in legal terminology, keyboarding, grammar and vocabulary. Many with court reporting degrees leverage their experience and advance their careers as paralegals and attorneys. Most states require practicing court reporters to be certified or licensed.
