Just as all people need food, there is one job sector that will always be needed: the culinary arts field. A person with a degree or certification in culinary arts will always been needed both on a personal and professional level. Not only will they be able to feed themselves and their own family, their skills in the food industry is marketable on a variety of levels from food handling to preparing food for customers. Culinary Arts Program Curriculum
The culinary arts program curriculum depends on the degree being pursued. In an associate's degree program, you typically study the basics, such as knife skills, nutrition, kitchen procedures, and presentation. Some programs may also offer more advance or specialized courses such as baking and pastry, international cuisine or dining room operations. In a bachelor's degree program, you typically receive management-level training and are prepared for leadership positions within the hospitality and fine foods industry. In diploma and certificate programs, you typically learn professional cooking, baking and pastry arts, culinary arts and restaurant management.
Culinary Arts Program Degrees
You will need to go to school for culinary arts. However, until some fields where an associate's or bachelor's degree is mandatory, the field of culinary arts is not nearly as rigid. The field of culinary arts has several levels of education you can choose do to: associate's, bachelor's, master's or simple certification or vocational degrees. Typically, someone who isn't sure what area that wants to specialize in is recommended to do an associate's degree in culinary arts. Someone who decides to get an associate's degree will have a larger variety of jobs to choose, such as: working in restaurants, private clubs, shift supervision, kitchen management, or food production. Someone who gets a more specialized degree (a certificate, bachelor's or master's) will primarily focus on a particular sector and skill set within the culinary industry.
Culinary Arts Jobs
Typically, there are a few main positions that you can expect to see no matter what business. These jobs are chefs, food preparation works, and cooks. These job positions are in high demand and are the easiest to get into no matter what level of education you have for your culinary arts degree. However, to the untrained eye, it might seem like these positions overlap each other. Each position has its own set of skills. For example, a chef is responsible for providing direction and management. They tell the other workers what needs to be done; they create the menus, order the food supplies, and create the recipes. A cook is responsible for actually preparing the food. The food preparation workers do exactly what their job titles indicate: they prepare the food to be cooked, cutting vegetables or preparing ingredients.
