Why obtain a degree close to home?
When students are deciding what college or graduate school to attend, they are often presented with a wide array of options. According to the Daily Toreador, there are many reasons to consider attending a school close to home.
By far, the biggest reason to study close to home is the fact that it can help students save money. Living with family members allows people to avoid paying exorbitant amounts for rent, allowing them to devote more time and attention to their coursework.
This is particularly true for students who qualify for financial aid. According to the National Center for Education, 66 percent of all undergraduates received financial assistance in the 2007-2008 academic year.
Similarly, this practice can allow local residents to receive in-state tuition rates, which require them to set aside a smaller portion of their budget to pay for their education.
Another reason to attend a school near home is that it facilitates networking. By living in a city where they already know people, students can establish broader networks that will help them succeed once they begin their careers.
Moreover, local schools often have strong reputations in their respective cities, so getting an education in the location where a person ultimately wants to work may help their careers as well.
