Are MOOCs Failing?
Only 5% of MOOC students finish a course and receive a certificate of completion. This is a fact that gets brought up time and time again to focus on the limitations of online education.
The biggest problem with this? It seems like most students who take MOOCs aren't taking them for a certificate. You see 80% of students surveyed state that they got exactly what they waneted from the course.
At first glance, these two facts can seem to be at odds with one and other but that actually isn't the case. You see, MOOC students are a fundamentally different kind of student than someone going a more tradition route. Udemy and others offer a huge smorgasbord of educational options and since MOOC students aren't trying to earn a degree, they tend to treat these courses as a wide array they can eagerly sample from.
