Six Sigma is a business management strategy, originally developed by Motorola, that is now widespread throughout numerous industries. Six Sigma emphasize continuous quality improvement, with the goal of near perfection (specifically 99.9997% efficiency). The name has its origin in the concept of eliminating defects in a process: to achieve Six Sigma, a given process (such as manufacturing a product) must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million. A defect is known as anything that may cause customer dissatisfaction. People who are experts in the methods of achieving the highest possible standards of quality are known as “Black Belts.”
