In order to be the best at your job, you need to have certain skill sets in order to be the best. Public safety means that you are going to have to have nerves of steel to do the things you need to do in order to keep the public safe. But, this individual will also need to have tactical experience in the field (be able to work with the tools and equipment that specific job uses, including weapons), they need to be analytical, be able to think on their feet and they need to have leadership skills. Even while you are working with other team members in a situation, you are going to need to be a team leader.

Safety is not about being a danger to others. It's about being able to plan and manage a team or set number of people to get an operation completed. This is one of the biggest reasons why management skills are needed. In the same way you wouldn't jump head first into a swimming pool, you wouldn't jump into a car accident situation or a forest fire without thinking about what you are going to do and how you are going to do it first.

A degree in public safety will prepare its students for all sorts of industries within the public health industry. They will learn how to coordinate large events, and how to do so safely so that everyone involved is safe. They also will learn about specific fields in this industry and various complex aspects of each career and position in the public safety domain.

The associate degree is a great option for people that want to be in criminal careers such as a police officer or in criminal justice. On the other hand, if you don't want to do a specialization and you simply want to work in public safety management, you are going to need a bachelors degree.

A career in public safety means that you have a myriad of job options ahead of you. Not only can you choose from a police officer, firefighter or one of the many medical service teams, but you can also work as/in; the federal park service, wildlife management, customs and border protection, natural relief, secret service, investigative services, search and rescue and the coast guard. As you can imagine, these are all positions that help keep the public safe from harm including natural disasters, terrorist attacks, pandemics, accidents, and other large events. As with most public safety careers, the salary will vary for each position.
